BEACHES

We’re just 25 minutes from some of the best beaches in the South of France — many of them gay, nude, and blessed with fine sand and the crystal-clear waters of the Mediterranean. Among our favourites are Sérignan Plage, a quieter, wilder stretch with both gay and naturist sections; Cap d’Agde, part of Europe’s largest naturist resort and infamous for its 'all-you-can-eat beach orgies'; and Plage de l’Espiguette — a vast sweep of sand dunes, clothing-optional and very popular with the boys. Three beaches, three very different moods… all unmistakably Mediterranean.

BEACH CLUBS

If sand and a warm bottle of water aren’t your thing, you can always step things up a notch at one of the area’s many chic beach clubs. Our favourite is the effortlessly cool, hippy-chic Le Bonaventure, where comfy beach beds, cute bronzed drinks waiters and a shaded lounge set the tone. Add an excellent cocktail and tapas bar — plus one of the best beach restaurants in the South of France — and you have a very persuasive alternative to roughing it on the sand.

ROCK POOLS

Once you’ve had your fill of the region’s gay beaches, the rock pools at Gorges d’Héric and Colombiers offer a refreshing alternative to the sea. Fed by crystal-clear mountain water, some of these natural pools are over two metres deep and wonderfully cool, even on the hottest days. Pack a picnic, bring plenty of wine, and claim a pool for the day — sunning yourself on warm rocks and dipping in whenever the mood takes you. Why not gather a few guests together and turn it into a relaxed group outing?

LAKE SALAGOU

Just 25 minutes away, Lake Salagou feels a world apart. Its dramatic, dark red landscapes — almost Martian in feel — contrast beautifully with cool blue water. Find a quiet cove shaded by trees for a spot of skinny-dipping, or head to the lake’s nude gay beach for a more 'social' experience. Pop over for a relaxed meal at Mas de RiRi, a cool restaurant with lovely views across the water. In spring and autumn, Lake Salagou also makes a perfect finishing point after a walk — stretch your legs, then cool off with a swim before heading home.
